    About the Ebook

This book chronicles our journey through China, from Beijing and Xi’an in the northeast to Kunming in the southwest and back east to Guilin and then Shanghai. Before we traveled there, we knew very little about it and most of what we thought we knew was based on a foundation of US and European prejudices. While we expected to see man-made wonders like the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors as well as beautiful landscapes, the most distinctive characteristic of China is its people.

Sue and I are Rich Howe Photography. I started in photography in the 1970s with Polaroid SX-70 and Canon 35mm film cameras but I got serious about the technical aspects of the art when Sue gave me a digital SLR about the time they began to equal the quality of 35mm film. I took some college classes, studied several art and photography books, did some workshops with professional photographers, and made thousands of pictures. I was privileged to participate in a workshop with Nels Akerlund, a freelance photographer for magazines such as the National Geographic Society, The New York Times, and Architectural Record. Sue has a great "eye" for memorable scenes and is phenomenal at editing all my shots into a presentable collection.
