About the Book
This Broken Smiles book was inspired by a visit by James Blake to what is known as The Greenline that divides the north and the south of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. The Greenline is a no-man's land that now exists as a result of the Turkish invasion of the island over 40 years ago. The entire area is an abandoned space of destruction, desolation and decay that is off limits to visitors.
Some of the photos in this book are actually of that area and the rest are inspired by what might have been seen in there if one was allowed in and were taken in other parts of Cyprus as well as Spain and Bulgaria.
Really the book is an exercise in post war / social trauma style photography. The sad aftermath of conflict and destruction and decay, leaving those that once lived in these spaces with what can only be thought of as the sadness of broken smiles.
