About the Book
This book is equal parts photo-journal, history lesson and urbex travel stories covering the origins and decaying remnants of the former Soviet Union. It is a love letter to deep diving beyond the normal tourist sights, and the joys of hostel adventures in eastern Europe.
The Soviets played out the story of empire on a global scale in only three generations: from political extremists in the collapsing pre-industrial Russian Empire, to modernisation and total war against Nazi-Germany, through nuclear-superpower competition with the United States and final dissolution. They left behind a wealth decaying equipment and facilities to explore but accessing these sites before they disappear involves dodging security, climbing fences and the occasional arrest.
Hardcover, 480 pages, with more than 1000 full colour images.
