About the Book
This book sets out to capture the history of Bangkok through what can be seen today. It seeks to discover Bangkok as it unfolds in each of its eras – King Taksin’s Thonburi; the building of Bangkok during the first three reigns; the transformation of Bangkok under the reforming kings Mongkut and Chulalongkorn; Bangkok during the Colonial era and the impact of war; and Bangkok in the modern era.
The author has lived in Bangkok for 25 years. This book is a tribute to a city that never stops giving its rich history and culture to backpackers, businessmen, tourists, travelers and the Thai people. It is a remarkable city, a unique city and a city for the ages.
History teaching was my job but also my passion. There is no better way of learning history than traveling to the site where it happened. As a teacher at a Bangkok international school for 20 years I was very fortunate to be so close to some of history's great sites, and even more fortunate that the wonderful students were keen to take history trips and make them so enjoyable. Since retirement I have had the great privilege of researching and writing family history and meeting some amazing people who are a part of my wider family.
