About the Book
The Canucks Rugby Club, established in Calgary in 1969, has a mandate to provide a strong, competitively tough team on the field and a definite camaraderie and distinct social atmosphere that fosters friendship, local contacts and enjoyment. My own involvement with the Canucks began in 2005 when I was looking around the Calgary clubs to place my son William who, with some influence from his Dad, was keen to start playing the game at the age of seven.
One season in and fed up with hanging around the touchline while this enthusiastic young gang of rugby players went through their skills development, I stepped up to join Martyn Bentley and Glen Kerr in coaching the boys. After a few years, too many business trips away forced me to pull back but I stayed in contact with the junior program through photographing their games. In 2017, I started photographing the senior sides and writing match reports.
In the 2018 season, the quinquagenary or 50th anniversary of the Canucks, I conducted 40 interviews and photographed some of the Old Boys and current athletes in over a dozen club games plus some Wolfpack and Team Canada international games involving players or ex-players. Here is the product, a celebration, in words and images, of the Calgary Canucks: Fifty Years of Rugby.
