About the Book
Camel racing is a frequent event in different parts of the Sultanate of Oman. The various tribal communities, most of
them Bedu, meet regularly, bringing their camels and participate in this particular race, the ‘Camel Al Ardah’. The main
purpose of Ardah is to show the beauty and strength of the Arabian camels, by riding them side by side in a straight
track. However, these camels are not for racing. Instead, the goal is for them to run as a pair, perfectly in time, thus
demonstrating their obedience and the control of the riders.
In this fast changing modern country, the Omani Government encourages retaining this old tradition. Cash and large
prizes are offered to winners.
