    About the Book

    Edit

This lecture series aims to get readers acquainted with the philosophical way of life by first addressing general questions about what philosophy is, and then offering modest, engaging interpretations of classical texts ranging from the fragments of pre-Socratic Greek philosophers and Plato’s Republic, to the epic Hindu poem the Bhagavad Gita and the Tao Te Ching. The central discovery is that although philosophy has come to be known as an academic discipline within universities, the philosophical way of life extends far beyond the bounds of such infrastructures as it puts us in touch with a critical existential posture. As philosophers, we live toward wonder in such a way that, through this life-long practice, we become continuously more prepared to address the general question that never dies: what does it mean to live the good life?

    Tyler Olsson
    Alabama

Well-being enthusiast from Texas & California, currently teaching philosophy in Alabama. When I wrote my book Head in the Clouds, I was still studying for my PhD in philosophy at the University of California, Santa Cruz. I've always been moved by thought that philosophy is, first and foremost, a way of life, and that this way of life is intrinsically worthwhile because of it's critical and reflective form. I therefore wanted to synthesize some of my insights into a digestible, introductory way for my friends, family, and anyone else who I may encounter along the way. My academic philosophical interests, which I have published some papers on, are on topics in aesthetics, philosophy of perception, epistemology, philosophy of mind, and the rationality of inspiration and action.
