    About the Book

    Edit

The absurdity of categorization lies at the heart of Shenitzer's playful yet serious art book. We are used to seeing lists of fish and other animals described by their salient features, illustrated for identification purposes. We are perhaps more shocked by illustrations of our stereotypes of human beings. Shenitzer's wit pairs two drawings that one would not have imagined side by side were it not for the way two words differ minimally by a single sound: lobster/mobster, shrimp/wimp. The minimal pairs featured in this series [read more] are sets of beings (usually marine creatures) and types of people (always stereotypes, often pejoratively described) whose names differ only minimally. Shenitzer combines verbal and visual humor with social criticism to create a witty and illuminating commentary on our human obsession with putting each other into categories. [135 wds]
