After the assassination of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum by a mob in 1844, Joseph’s wife Emma buried them secretly under cover of night. Although some knew the general location of the resting place in Nauvoo, the exact spot was unknown and Emma took the secret to her grave.

There they stayed until 1928, when rising waters from the Mississippi River threatened to engulf the graves and forever deny the church founders a final memorial.
