    About the Book

    Edit

Living abroad changes you. From my personal experience of living abroad since 2013 in four different countries, the transformation that takes place reshapes your thinking and challenges your own cultural background. This exposure piqued my curiosity of how others dealt with this transformation, particularly those who were already learning and adapting to new experiences—namely parents, but particularly fathers.

How does a man change when he becomes a father? How does a father change when he moves abroad? “Foreign Lands: American Fathers Living Abroad” explores what fatherhood is, the identity of these men, and how they interact with their children while navigating the foreign world of parenting within another country.

American photographer Ashley Truckey seeks to powerfully, intimately, & authentically present visual stories of humanity; with the purpose of expanding mindsets, influencing change, & showing glimpses of the workmanship of mankind. Beginning in 2008, Ashley learned she adored photographing people & sharing their lives in creative ways. Moving abroad in 2013, her world changed as the new host culture brought new perspective. She noticed the stereotypes in her own heart & home nation, which resulted in her sharing her experiences with people in America. Desiring to expand her abilities, she began an MA in Photography in 2016. The program refined her vision from a general interest in people to a focus on family, globalization, & identity. Her current work explores what fatherhood is & how fathers relate to their children. The project encompasses the cross-cultural environment these dads live in, the unknown realm of being a parent, & a search for understanding in her own nomadic life.
