    About the Book

    Edit

At 15, my father narrowly escaped the Armenian Genocide after seeing his family butchered in the fields of their farm in Turkey. My mother, who grew up on Manhattan’s fashionable Riverside Drive, was disowned by her wealthy Jewish father the day she married "that poor tailor in the Bronx.” I was born to Victor and Sophia just as the Twenties began to roar, but the life I remember begins after the Crash of 1929. I grew up during the Great Depression on Philadelphia's Main Line – a world of grand estates, mom-and-pop shops, and pharmacies with soda fountains. In my youth, a Pushmondon (our version of the Armenian word for “sloppy") was the lowest form of life. "Pushmondon” is the story of how that word shaped my life, from handling secret codes as a World War II sailor to my life as an Ad Man. Fred Shamlian has written over 70 stories for young adults. “The Adventures of Archibald & Mergatroyd” (also a Kindle book) follows two brave, quick-witted boys who overcome raging rivers and international criminals with the help of Windy, the West Wind. Now 93, Mr. Shamlian resides in Media PA, “Everybody’s Hometown,” and continues to write daily.
