“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”

    Matthieu Ricard, Buddhist monk

Grégory Gérault has an eye. His eye for Iceland – which he knew only by repute until his first visit seven years ago – is not only the clear eye of the outsider. Grégory has made the country, its people and their way of life his own; and he does not observe from outside, but from the inside, with the perceptions of the initiate. There is affection in his gaze, like that of a son who looks on his aged parents, or the home of his youth. Grégory’s MYCELAND is both familiar and exotic, both his and ours.

His landscapes impart a strong sense of the rocky ground, rugged beauty, lowering skies, high winds, the distant horizon and wide open spaces, but also of the subtleties of tone and texture, the delicacy of mosses and other vegetation, which contrives to flourish against the odds.

The smallness of humanity, and man’s efforts to make his mark on the overwhelming landscape, are signified by road signs, mountain huts, isolated buildings and abandoned farmhouses. Although Grégory also takes photographs for tourist publications and magazines, his strong connection with the country leads him beyond the bounds of glossy presentation, to capture an essence which has nothing to do with convention of beauty.

And Grégory photographs people too, in the countryside and in the city. Once again, his eye is neither condescending nor prying, but full of respect and goodwill. He is an outstanding portraitist, who photographs people in their own environment – not in order to emphasise their oddities, but to show them as people living truly in the here and now.

The beauty of a photograph often consists in the subject being rendered all but abstract by the framing and by the photographer’s eye. The universal beauty of a mountain, a meander in a road or river, a bubbling hot mud-spring, or the tracks left in new-fallen snow by the wheels of a pram, transcends time and place, due to the eye of the beholder who presents it to us.

    Matthieu Ricard, moine bouddhiste
