    About the Book

    Edit

Even for a first time traveler to the highlands of Peru, like me, it becomes obvious that, though the Spanish conquistadores tried to eradicate the Quechuan culture, they did not succeed; and that now, in 2017, indigenous cultures in Peru are thriving; the story is not over. In this book I have paired the writings that a member of an Incan royal family, Garcilaso de la Vega El Inca, recorded in 1609, with photographs of Cusco and environs from my recent journey to Peru in 2017. An epilogue, “there is no such thing as a one-way land bridge,” by the North American Muscogee poet, Joy Harjo, provides a perspective on the writing of history. Whose story gathers credence, and why?

    Sarah Elizabeth Starr

Sarah Starr is a Los Angeles based photographer. Since she was twelve and on the receiving end of a Kodak Brownie, a camera has framed her way of looking. She had an eclectic career combining photography and education: teaching darkroom photography and film to teenagers in a local progressive school and teaching teachers as an assistant professor of education at USC. She received a Certificate in Photography from Otis Institute of the Arts, studying platinum-palladium printing with master, Jan Pietrzak. A long time resident of Los Angeles, Sarah served on the boards of LA Coalition of Essential Schools, Friends of the LA River, and Greenway Arts Alliance. From 1997-2010 she worked as a consultant for school reform in LAUSD. She is pleased now to dedicate more time to her own photographic view, lately turning from analog silver gelatin photography to digital color. Sarah is a member of the LA Center for Photography.
