    About the Book

    Edit

On New Year's Day 2017, three lifelong friends set off into the dark heart of Tasmania's rugged southwest wilderness on a quest to find the elusive and seldom-seen Vanishing Falls.
This is the tale of that epic trip, told through the eye of the lens.
Filled with epic wilderness photography and haunting descriptions of a world few humans will ever get to see, "Into the Heart of Darkness" is also a memoir of beauty, camaraderie and hardship in the wilderness.

All profits raised from the sale of this book or PDF file will be donated to the University of Tasmania's "Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal".

    Andrew Smyth
    Huon Valley, Tasmania, Australia

I am a fine art photographer from southern Tasmania, specialising in black and white landscapes and abstracts. I choose to shoot almost exclusively in 35mm black & white film, not only as a way to emphasise form and composition over colours, but also as I feel this medium best captures the sense of timelessness I seek out in my subjects. I am an avid bushwalker and wilderness explorer, and I share a deep love and a special connection with the hidden and wild corners of my rugged and mountainous home – the island state of Tasmania, Australia. As an animal lover, I am particularly disturbed by the plight of the now endangered Tasmanian Devil, and I am supporting the valuable research into finding a cure for the devastating facial tumor disease afflicting this iconic marsupial by donating all profits from my books and PDFs sold through this website to the "Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal". To find out more about the disease and how you can help, please visit www.tassiedevil.com.au
