About 200km inland from the Mozambican port of Beira lies the forgotten game reserve that was once home to the highest density of wildlife in Africa. By the 1990s two decades of civil war had decreased the game in Gorongosa National Park by 95 per cent. Lion numbers have since stabilised, but with prey multiplying, they should be producing offspring. For some unknown reason they are not breeding.
