    About the Book

    Edit

The Ties That Bind exhibition was organized to highlight this fact: that some of the best art out there can be found in our own backyards.

The Ties That Bind features two emerging photographers—Preston Gannaway and Dana Romanoff—who not only have ties to Charlotte, North Carolina, but also have careers that are already successful and very promising.

Preston grew up in the Queen City and took photography classes at Myers Park High School with the noted photographer and educator, Byron Baldwin. It was at the Concord (NH) Monitor, where she created the powerful series of photographs Remember Me for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography.

Dana was raised in New York, but eventually found her way to Charlotte as a staff photographer for The Charlotte Observer. During her 14 months with the newspaper, she was a member of the team of reporters who were 2008 Pulitzer Prize finalists in the category of Public Service.

The Ties That Bind was exhibited at The Light Factory, September 17, 2009, through January 10, 2010, in the Middleton McMillan Gallery.
