    About the Book

    Edit

The book Carola documents the abandonment of the old village of Mato Grosso, today called Vila Deputado Augusto Clementino, in the municipality of Serro in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Mr. Damião is the only resident and son of the land donor to the Catholic Church. The site was declared a Municipal Historic Site. I reproduce the duly authorized draft of the letter of complaint from its sole resident addressed to the Bishop of the local Diocese. The intransigence of the constituted powers led to the almost total abandonment of one of the most beautiful places of the Estrada Real de Minas Gerais. Even in its present state, this ghost town gave my photographic gaze these beautiful images that I bring to the public as a form of denunciation. Carola was the nickname of Senhor Damião's younger sister and so was called the Serra by his family.
