    About the Book

    Edit

In 2005, the first class of MFA’s graduated from the New York Studio School. This was a sea change for the school, which had been founded in opposition to the increasing academic emphasis in art schools in the 1960’s. Changing with the times, the Studio School now offers an accredited MFA.

In 2015, the first class of Studio School MFA’s had been out for 10 years and it seemed an interesting time to catch up with them, look at their studio practices, and how the New York Studio School had influenced them. Below are interviews conducted with some members of the class of 2005.

Artists interviewed: Jim Plunkett, Becky Yazdan, Michael Meehan, Emma Zakarevicius, Margaret Noel, Soo Jin Lee, Cathy Depasquale, Meghan Wilbar, Katherine Chilcote, Debbie Margalit, Jennifer Brown.

    Geoffrey Stein
    New York, NY, USA

I am a recovering lawyer, who has been painting full-time since 2000. I received an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art, London. I currently live and paint in New York City. I am represented by the Minster Gallery in the UK. My work can be seen at www.geoffreystein.com. I paint to find out what I think about the world: to discover the things I do not have words for. I savor the slips of the hand that express one's unconscious feelings. I am interested in the tension between abstraction and realism. I do not want to make an academic copy of the model or a photorealistic illustration. My paintings explore the tension between what needs to be shown and what does not, the seen and the unseen.
