    About the Book

    Edit

This catalogue accompanies the multi-media exhibition of the same name conceived by the photographer Jennifer Colten and shown at The Sheldon Art Galleries, St. Louis in 2017. The catalogue features 50 color landscape photographs by Colten, essays by Azzurra Cox and Michael R. Allen, and contributions by filmmaker, Denise Ward-Brown, documentation of an art installation and video by Dail Chambers, and historical maps. The catalogue is edited by Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, Director of the Sheldon Art Galleries. Washington Park Cemetery was established in St. Louis in 1920 as a burial ground for African-Americans at a time when rigid segregation was common practice. For nearly 70 years, it was the largest black cemetery in the region. During its long history, it was subjected to major disruptions when Highway 70 was built in the 1950s, bisecting the land, and when bodies were disinterred and moved when parts were appropriated by airport and light rail expansions in the 1970s and 1990s. This exhibition tells the story of the cemetery’s long history, and how politics and racial injustice have affected its landscape.
