About the Book
Where are the photographs of black culture by black female photographers? This project depicts my African American family and community through photographs and objects. The pictures I make come from a place of biography, intuition, and personal politics. Black In Texas: A History Lesson aims to keep the culture and history of black representation alive.
The publication and photographs exhibited reflect a system of categories: gentrification, social landscape, family portraiture, and black historical monuments. The work was made in various locations within Austin, Galveston, and the Texas City area. One categorical example, analyzes my family’s neighborhood that was part of the East Austin gentrification movement started in the mid 2000’s. Today, homes and businesses continue to be bought from out-of-state developers in order to modernize the area and capitalize on its vicinity to central Austin. I made this category in an attempt to preserve my neighborhood’s history.
