    About the Book

    Edit

Descendants of Clarke Middleton Whittlesee and Jane Elder living in New Zealand, always knew there was a family link to gold mining in Australia. This story follows Jane Elder from her departure from England in 1849 with her first husband Cuthbert Smith and their two small children. The Smith family settled in Melbourne for a time before moving to Bacchus Marsh during the early years of the Victorian gold rush. It was not until widow Jane Smith (nee Elder) married her second husband, Clarke Whittlesee a gold miner that the connection was made to the goldfields of Pleasant Creek- Stawell. Jane Whittlesee (nee Elder) lived in Stawell until moving to Arrowtown New Zealand in 1883 with her twin daughters after Clarke died from the 'miner's complaint'.

    Ann Goodwin

An UPDATE: Ann Goodwin was a physiotherapist working in community health when she was introduced to sailing. Ann has published sailing stories in community newspapers, club magazines and newsletters. She began writing her sailing memoir when she joined a "Mentoring your Memoir" class at the Council Adult Education, Melbourne, Australia. Other class participants were writing a family history but Ann wanted to write about her sailing life. December 2016: Ann still meets with fellow writers from this CAE class and she has written her second book - a biographical novel about her great grandmother who came to Australia by sailing ship in 1849. Her first book was written in response to the many and varied questions she had received from non-sailors, both men and women. For her second book Ann chose to write about Jane Elder as no one else in the family had identified the amazing story of a woman who had lived in Victoria during the gold rush years before travel to New Zealand in 1883.
