    About the Book

    Edit

This book is the result of an urban designer's slight obsession with a very curious and highly visible phenomenon in former Yugoslavia: the exchange office (menjačnica). It is not uncommon, particularly on the streets of Novi Sad, to encounter four or five exchange offices in one block. There is no shortage of opportunity to withdraw, exchange, sell, carry or use money in this unique context.

The menjačnica may be, simply, perfunctory. Yet just as a building serves to shelter people from a storm and, in doing so, says something essential about the human condition; it might also be possible that the menjačnica reveals something about humanity in more depth than the cursory glance suggests. This compilation of artistic photographs (taken between April and July 2016) is meant to prompt such contemplations.
