What is a good portrait? No two people are exactly alike. The
shape of our face and the colour and texture of our skin varies
from person to person, depending on time and place. The face
contains dozens of muscles, which in their various combinations
allow us to make as many as seven thousand facial expressions.
Exhibiting the photographs of Maria Austria and Carla van de
Puttelaar together appears self-evident: there are striking
similarities in their manner of observation. Both their oeuvres
reveal a special interest in portrait photography and both include
remarkably expressive photographs of women.
The exhibition is more than just a photographic dialogue. Van de
Puttelaar created new work for this project, using the Rolleiflex
camera originally employed by Maria Austria. The result is a
unique exhibition and an interesting visual encounter between the
work of a contemporary photographer and that of an “old master”.
