    About the Book

    Edit

A visually stunning photographic journey through the wilds of the deep south, documented by New Zealand’s international award-winning nature photographers, Aliscia Young and Richard Sidey.

“In an eastern basin beside New Zealand's Southern Alps, close to the 45th parallel, our office is at the edge of the wild. Go further south and the already low-density population decreases. Go further south, and leave the mainland behind. Sail south into the roaring forties, furious fifties and screaming sixties, where the restless ocean creates its own mountains, where the islands are remote, uninhabited and represent wild in every sense of the word.

Amongst the ferocious storms and winter darkness, life here seems improbable and impossible.Yet it is in these cold, bleak, inhospitable wilds of the deep south where life has found a way and flourishes.”

Photographed over ten years, Wild South is an artistic collaboration capturing the profound beauty and true essence of the southern wilderness. Locations include the Bounty Islands, Enderby and Campbell Island in the New Zealand’s subantarctic, Macquarie Island, Patagonia, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica.

Presented in a minimalist style, in large format on the exquisite archival eggshell-textured Mohawk Fine Paper, the images here will speak for themselves.

Aliscia Young is an award-winning, professional photographer based in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, and has worked on expedition vessels from Antarctica to the Arctic as a photographer, videographer and lecturer. Aliscia’s work holds particular concern for the wellbeing of the planet and the impacts of climate change and has been featured in galleries globally. Richard Sidey, an award-winning environmental filmmaker and international nature photographer, has documented the profound beauty, inhabitants and fragility of the world’s polar regions for over a decade. His passion for the wild is evident throughout his work, which aims to reconnect a largely disconnected human population with nature. His assignments have led him to Russia, Canada, Greenland and Svalbard, throughout the South Pacific Islands, West Africa, South America, and across the wild Southern Ocean to Antarctica’s Ross Sea.
