    About the Book

    Edit

Banda is a truly special village in rural Rwanda. Its remoteness and close proximity to a rainforest of international importance makes it so. It is a hauntingly beautiful tropical paradise of cultivated green valleys and hills, with the mountains of the mist-shrouded forest as a backdrop. The people of Banda live a life not much different from what it was hundreds of years ago and the genocide that swept Rwanda in 1994 left Banda largely untouched, thanks to its isolation.

Beautiful Banda is a celebration of Banda - its people and the environment they find themselves in.

    Wanganui, North Island, New Zealand

Born and raised in South Africa, I moved to New Zealand with my parents at the age of 17. I first became interested in photography while studying towards a Biotechnology degree at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand. I later obtained a diploma in Professional Photography at the Southern Institute of Technology in Invercargill, New Zealand in 2004 while exploring the untouched, "Lord of the Rings" wilderness of the region. Initially specialising in nature photography, my work has been published in a number of noted magazines and newspapers in New Zealand and Australia. I got an opportunity in 2008 to travel to Burundi, a small central African country - one of the poorest and most unstable states in the world. I adapted to using a more documentary style of photography to highlight the plight of the people there and did volunteer and paid assignments for major international aid organisations in Burundi, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya.
