A challenge was put forth to a group of metalsmithing artists. Can your work stand out in a crowd if you are given the same 5 raw materials to make a piece of jewelry? The following questions arose. What defines us as artists? Is it the need to express or narrate our experiences, or our imagination, as a visual statement? Is style a continuum for the artist producing the work or was it predicated on the materials available? Does the material we use define how we communicate our personal creative voice? Does the creative voice extend or expand when presented with a new challenge?
