About the Photographer
Arius Hopman was born and raised in a family of artists in Kashmir India. His mother became a world renowned artist who was commissioned to sculpt Mahatma Gandhi (twice from life, exhibited in the Smithsonian), the Shah of Iran (bronze equestrian), Prime Minister Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Maharajahs and others. Arius grew up with paint and clay as his playthings and soon became proficient in both media. He studied art in college. In Japan, he learned to paint with a sumi brush. In his travels, he has sold art in Japan, Mexico, Europe, and the USA. In 1985, Arius moved to Hawaii from Taos New Mexico.
On Kauai Arius has dedicated himself to the mastery of watercolor and photography. After three one-man shows he opened his own gallery in Hanapepe in 1997. A rapid expansion of skill and volume of work has ensued. Arius won an Acquisition Award from the state of Hawaii in 1996 and a Kauai Society of Artists Award in 1997.
The year 2007 marked the 10th anniversary for the ARIUS HOPMAN GALLERY on gallery row in Hanapepe on the Garden Isle of Kauai.
About the Photographs
In a few short years digital photography has far surpassed film in resolution and color gamut. Add to these superlatives the creative potential of Adobe Photoshop and you have a truly formidable new art form for imaginative photographers. Many of the creative choices in Photoshop (cropping, composition, color balance, saturation, exposure and contrast for instance) are the same used in painting, so rigorous artistic training is a definite advantage. These choices barely introduce the potential of the software. Printing and display offer further choices. In the Arius Hopman Gallery all of fine art photos can be printed on canvas any size, stretched up to 12 feet long, and sent to you ready to hang.
