ROTTERDAM is a major city in the Dutch province of Zuid-Holland,
50 miles south of Amsterdam, the capital. It has a population of 624.815 people (December 2014). Its first settlement, called Rotta, was founded in the 9th century. The city is located at the Nieuwe Maas, one of the rivers in the delta formed by the Rhine and Meuse. During World War II the old city centre of Rotterdam was completely bombed and destroyed by the German airforce. Time goes by and
the Erasmus Bridge, built in 1996, was the start of the construction of various modern architecture on both sides of the Nieuwe Maas.
