    About the Book

Gia Carangi embodied the archetype of a supermodel in the ’80s. In her all-too-short, but meteoric rise to fame, Gia Carangi led a life that encapsulated both the triumph and terror of success. An overnight sensation in the fashion world, Gia’s legacy serves as a cautionary tale, and a powerful reminder of the double-edged sword of fame and fortune. “She was completely spontaneous and intuitively natural,” says John Stember, one of Gia’s primary photographers who worked with the model during her short career. “She had her own way of moving in front of the camera, she was unlike any other model I’d worked with before or since.”

    John Stember
New York USA and Tahiti French Polynesia

John Stember was born in London, England. He opened his first photography studio at age 19. Five years later he moved to Paris and then on to New York and quickly became a successful fashion photographer. He has worked with most every major fashion magazine in the world including Vogue. Harpers Bazaar, Marie Claire, Glamour and New York Times. In April 2001 after a long and prestigious career in New York he set out to sail the 7000 miles to Tahiti French Polynesia. Pursuing an intuitive calling to immerse himself in the truth of nature. He felt compelled to follow in the footsteps of his long time inspiration and mentor Paul Gauguin, who had made the same journey many years before. He arrived in the Marquesas Islands to a wave of inspiration that led him to develop a passion for the raw beauty of nature. John’s work is now strongly influenced by 'Primitivism' as he holds the belief that primitive man was closer to the source creativity in nature than so called civilized man is today.
