    About the Book

    Edit

A photographic trip with an Old School Tattooist, Dieter Rudolph, from Melbourne, Australia. "Gettin' Past the Chain" explores the relationship between the Tattooer and the tattooed, the beauty of aging tattooed skin and the unique space inside the Tattoo Studio.

"We decided to make this book about Dieter Rudolph because he has marked us both for life and each time we go to have a tattoo it is an enjoyable experience: a great conversation, laughter, or silence if that is required, a respite from the day to day. Dieter inspires us to continue to lead unconventional lives, just by being himself.

When you have a few tattoos people always ask - what will you do when you are older? As tattoos are indeed permanent they age with your skin. Fresh tattoos are bright and clear - bold. As tattoos age they fade and spread into the surrounding skin. We live in a culture that worships youth and often fails to appreciate that there is a beauty in a life well lived, a skin inhabited fully."
