Theodore Trauernicht was a young German immigrant thrust into the turmoil of the American Civil War and Reconstruction period. As a Captain in the Second Missouri Infantry he served from the first critical days in St. Louis through the Perryville, Murfreesboro and Tullahoma campaigns. He gained a command in the second African-American regiment raised in Tennessee, the Thirteenth U. S. Colored Infantry, and served with that unit from its first day to its last. After the war Trauernicht became the editor of the Nashville Demokrat , becoming an advocate for the policies of Andrew Johnson. For his war service he was awarded the rank of Brevet Brigadier General.
