About the Book
Venice and San Marino are three hours apart from each other on the eastern side of Italy.
Venice was built beginning sometime in the second century AD on a series of 118 islands. The surrounding marshes proved to be an effective natural defense against marauding invaders. With 150 canals, it also created, by happy coincidence, the need for 409 bridges, ranging in size from tiny pedestrian bridges a few meters in length to the massive Rialto bridge.
By contrast, San Marino, founded in 301 AD, took to Mount Titan for defense. Perched 2,425 feet above sea level, the fortifications overlook the valley below as a reminder of the protection they gave to this microstate within Italy.
The grandeur and age of the bridges and fortifications stand as a legacy to not only the skills of the original builders, but also to the artisanship they created for so many generations to appreciate.
The following pages are pairs of images in both color and B&W. In some cases, one or the other will clearly stand out as the more powerful interpretation, while most of the time, they both stand equally, telling their own stories from different parts of the spectrum.
Both Cathy and I created these images, as noted on each one. We hope you enjoy viewing them as much as we enjoyed creating them.
