    About the Book

    Edit

Southern California is an extremely important area for railroads and those businesses and consumers who rely on them, which is virtually the entire country. For it is here that goods ranging from heavy machinery to pencil sharpeners arrive from Asian ports at the harbor of Los Angeles where they are transferred to trains and begin their lengthy trip across country.

This book is a photo documentary of one of these railroads, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, and it's mainline track, the Transcon, from where it begins at Terminal Island, to where it leaves the Los Angleles area in San Bernardino.

Some 80 frieght trains a day traverse this route, along with numerous commuter and regional trains. To anyone interested in trains, this exciting and diverse 75-mile stretch of mainline track offers a spectacle rarely seen in American railroading. The combination of mile-long trains travelling at high speed through the Southern California infrastructure and in sight of beautiful mountains and valleys makes for a thrilling experience.

This book attempts to capture some of the excitement and wonder of this phenomenon.
