This is basically a book of photographs taken in the 1960's of Newcastle upon Tyne before ALL the major changes in the city centre took place, Eldon Square Shopping Centre, Swan House roundabout, John Dobson Street to name but a few. Rather than just have reconstituted images of photographs already published in various small booklets, I wanted to produce something different and more comprehensive. Most of the images were in such a poor condition with a myriad of marks and creases that I had to clean them up first to the best of my limited ability before conversion. I then used various graphic software programmes to digitally enhance them in order to produce a more ‘hard’ edged, half photographic/half drawing ink feel. I thank Newcastle City Library for giving me permission to use these photographs from their vast archive, and in particular, the library information officer for all her assistance.
