In writing Dad, I used photographs which began with him as a baby in 1908. The structure of the book is created by letters and journals, mostly his and my mother’s but also, at the end of his life, mine. His letters reveal both his quirky sense of humor and the times in which he lived, including the Great Depression. He began his working life in the factory but rose to become Comptroller of a local wire and cable company. Business travels took him to Chicago, where as a young man he participated in a bankruptcy hearing in which lawyers were told to put their guns on the table. Mother’s memoirs enrich the telling of Dad, who died at age 48. He was an Everyman, one whose life came and went without fanfare, someone who went to work wearing a suit, necktie, and fedora, but who was happiest sitting at home in the breakfast nook, drinking a beer and eating a limburger sandwich.
