As some of you know, I just got back from India a few days ago. My dad, Shetal, Utpal, and I had gone to India to take my mom's remains to the Ganges. I remember doing a similar ceremony for my grandfather and grandmother (mom's parents) a long time ago. The time we spent in the Himalayas and in Haridwar was wonderful.

We did the Asti Visarjan ceremony on the banks of the Ganges river, with mom's remains scattered on the holy river’s waters. It is believed that when the ashes are mixed in the waters, Moksha (loving, eternal union with God and considered the highest perfection of existence) will be achieved and the person’s soul will be blessed and will rest in peace for eternity.

The ceremony took place at Har ki Pauri which is a famous ghat on the banks of the Ganges. This revered place is the major landmark of the holy city of Haridwar. Literally, "Har" means "Lord Shiva", "ki" means "of" and "pauri" means "steps". It is believed that it is precise spot where the Ganges leaves the mountains and enters the plains.
