As a painter I am influenced by the wild and beautiful countryside where I live, which I never tire of looking at. I like paintings that offer something different the more you look at them, that repay repeated viewing. I aim to create paintings that fall between figuration and abstraction which are intriguing and complex and draw in the observer, allowing the viewer to create their own story. My work is a balancing act between preparation and improvisation, between fluid and fixed, planned and unpredicted – reflecting the ebb and flow of nature. This process enables me to be free with my imagination as the marks develop and best express my feeling about a subject. Based on landscape, my work is not intended to be a copy of what I see, rather it expresses my experience of the environment, a memory of a moment of being in the world.
