About the Book
I walked the city to experience it. I drew a rectangular line on a map and walked the designated route. I repeated this ten times, over ten different days. I was inspired to design my own path through the city. I was inspired by the hope of being lost.
I probed the city for traces of prior events left scattered on its surfaces. I was fascinated by seemingly unremarkable moments and ordinary objects. They appeared as ephemeral clues that could unravel the story of this space.
The walking motion created work, and the work created walking momentum. I forgot myself and became one with the city. The walks unified body, mind and my surroundings. The photographs are the expression of this unification.
Through walking I came to know this city.

About the Creator
Paul Walsh
Brighton, England
My photographic practice is primarily concerned with walking and documenting my passage through a chosen terrain. I walk as a way of experiencing and understanding a place, and use photography to study its topography. I am ultimately inspired by how walking can open up the world to the individual and how, through the combined effects of closer observation and the motion of walking, we may come to know a place in a more profound way. I originally studied Painting at College and Illustration at Southampton Solent University; I then went on to graduate, with a degree in Fine Art Documentary Photography at LJMU. I am now based in Brighton, UK, and am currently studying on the Photography MA at the University of Brighton.
