About the Book
This book draws indirectly from the first edition of the International Seminar Unneeded Conversations, held in May 2010, in Porto, Portugal. The seven texts printed here can only give a partial idea of what happened during those four days of a wide-ranging debate on the practice and theory of art and with the contribution of many participants. That is why this volume is presented as an autonomous edition and not as the seminar proceedings. Even so, we hope this book will be both a memory of our unneeded conversations in 2010 and a contribution to the ongoing debate on the close relation between theory and practice in the arts.  Further volumes will follow.

ounded in March 2011, the i2ADS it´s a R&D unit that operates in the expanded areas of Art, Design and Artistic Studies in general, with a special bound to the surrounding social environment and contemporary concerns. The decision of joining in this Research Unit Art and Design allow it to clarify their specific and promote transdisciplinarity between those areas. Based in the School of Fine Arts, University of Porto, it has strong connections with other R&D units and aims to stand out as an international reference in the domain of Artistic Studies. At the level of Graduate studies, especially postgraduate, the articulation between teaching and researching is also one main factor of i2ADS action.
