About the Book
Paintings included in this catalog are from two of my ongoing series, Water Marks and Soundings. At the heart of the works are the metaphoric possibilities that result from the contemplation of water. Ocean currents, navigation routes, intersection of land, sea, and sky, and the imagining of what exists in the unspecified depths of water are all sources for these series of oil paintings. They suggest the mystery of what exists below the surface, sometimes turbulent and at other times quietly serene. Formally, these investigations feed my interest in contradictions and dualities. The sublime is explored through extremes of light and dark, movement and stasis, and the viewer’s position of precarious suspension within these enigmatic spaces. Initially a direct response to place and experience, the work emerges from the physicality of the material and a dialogue between dense accumulations of paint and drawing materials with open passages evoking light, air, and water. The accreted marks tell their own histories with a sense of urgency and vulnerability as they collide, dissipate, and reassemble.
