About the Book
Part journal, part travelogue, this book is a selection of the best posts from Katie Dickerson's popular Long Aye-Lander in Glasgow blog, which she wrote from October 2006 to December 2009. It is the funny and compelling story of a twentysomething New Yorker who decides to move to Europe after college. The usual struggles of scraping together the rent and living in the only neighbourhood she could afford were mixed with the thrill of exploring a new culture. Along the way, she discovered her voice and found it had a Scottish accent.
It also covers a unique period in which to be an American living abroad. In these pages are Katie's observations on being an unprepared representative for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; notes on the failed terrorist attack on Glasgow Airport in 2007; and field reports on the international Barack Obamamania of 2008. Between these historic touchstones are Katie's fascinating and often hilarious ruminations on her own identity and cultural allegiances as a Scotsophile New Yorker with a thirst for European travels with her Puerto Rican boyfriend. From the suburbs of Long Island to the tenements of the West End, these are the best moments from Katie's incredible journey.
