The Daryl Baker Collection “Oregon Territory” which began to be assembled in the early 1950’s when Daryl was still in high school in Scappoose, Oregon where an event occurred where a boy tossed an arrowhead down a school hallway and it landed at Daryl’s feet, after this Daryl began purchasing collections as gifts from his father whom worked for the local telephone company primarily during 1950-56 with some minor purchases during the early 1960’s as well as a personal finds with landowner permission and permits obtained by the Oregon Archaeological Society with sponsored digs from notable advocational archaeologists such as Emery Strong. The collection contained stone utilitarian objects such as projectile points, darts, lanceolates, blades, knives, and scrapers as well as Chinese and NW Coast Fur Trade items and goods, carvings and misc. proto historic objects that the bulk of the 3000+ piece collection was composed of approximately 85% Columbia River and 15% Great Basin American Indian artifacts that the prehistoric makers and parties whom used them decided to discard or inadvertently lost during the course of life. The typologies of points represented range from Clovis to historic times. Daryl also has served in the United States Air Force from 1956-60 and worked as a deputy sheriff in South Central, Oregon before retiring, his interests have also included coin, stamps, and gun collecting.
The personally found by Daryl Baker prehistorically flintknapped and misc. ground stone relics originated from Lower Columbia River sites many of which are now lost due to modern development or underwater from hydroelectric dam installations. The sites include Wakemap Mound, Celilo Falls, Decker, Sauvies Island, Trojan, Power Plant, Fort Rock, Warner Valley, Christmas Valley, as well as multiple sites in and near Scappoose and Brownsville, Oregon. Daryl Baker purchased and acquired artifacts as well.
