In the summer of 2011, a girl named Juliana travelled through India.  For 60 days she sought to experience authentic India, from the chaos of Delhi to the peaceful Himalayas of Leh, all the way up to the Kashmir Valley and as far south as the beaches of Goa, and everything in between.  Traveling with one small pack, her transportation of choice was, but not limited to, public buses; finding her way in rickshaws, taxis, shikaras, planes, trains, hitchhiking, and of course many miles spent walking too.  She overcame illness, "challenging" bathrooms, monkey attacks, the world's most dangerous roads, professional touts and cons, soggy sleeping conditions, and the endless list of barriers you must face when traveling in a demanding country such as India.  In spite of these, she also encountered a world filled with inspiring architecture, breathtaking landscapes, white sand beaches, friendly guesthouses, and the most delicious food you have ever tasted.  All the along the way, sharing her experiences with a boy named David.  David carried a camera.  These are his photos.



The Process



The photographs that follow were captured with one of two cameras, a Lomo LCA+ (32mm f/2.8) or a SuperHeadz Slim (21mm 1/125 sec f/11 ) with film purchased, processed and scanned (except for two rolls) in India. No zoom, no autofocus, no 10 gig memory card. Instead I used my feet, basic zone focus, and 13 rolls of film over a two month period. Only a hand full of photographs were edited on the computer, and then, only for basic corrections. Does this mean they are any better than my $2000 digital slr carrying counter parts? No, just different, but with hopes that by using a physical material which directly captures the essense of life (sunlight), producing a tangible result, may bring you closer to that captured moment in time. In short, using film, allowed me to create an authentic and original looking colletion of images that were true to myself and my journey. Enjoy.
