A gate. A latch. A squeaky hinge.



The scene was fairly nondescript as I remember it. An old farm road brought me there. Weeds knee-high. Grasshoppers bombarding my faded jeans. And a gate, barely hanging on well-worn hinges. The overgrowth of weeds and time threatened to consume the simple gate, but it stood its ground and time stood still beside it.



I photographed this moment more than twenty-five years ago—a single, unpretentious photo with a quiet story to tell. A portal: an entrance into a moment, captured in time.



That simple photograph, relegated so long to a box in the attic, is a haunting reminder of a whispering moment. I thought about that moment for decades, finally devoting a year to discovering more. Portals, those timeless entrances experienced in a moment, a breath, a flicker of light and shadow. The result—a series of quiet photographs that whisper untold stories.



Lingering around portals are stories that go beyond a cracked window or tattered door. There is more—unknown, unexpected, and unimagined. And it was there that I too lingered, capturing the untold stories of those who had come and gone through these places. It was there that quiet entrances became portals.
