in transit | N21 is part of the nightbus project where the interstices of night, space, performance, and theatricality are explored as they interweave and disconnect. Staging the N21 as a transitory theatre, ideas about identity performance are visually captured to create an omnibus of London transportation night life. This busnographic journey is a look at how the frontier of the night enmeshed with the liminality of the bus create a transitory theatre where the driver becomes the stage director, and the riders the actors. I am the cinematographer capturing the seen/scene.



Through the captured images you will see that the nightbus is far from a proletariat chariot for the drunken, disorderly, and discarded. The bus is a theatre, and though the plot is as bumpy as the ride and the settings as transient as the riders there is a whole play with scenes and acts taking place. The people riding are performing their roles trying to get the most out of life. I, the audience, even become one of them: a performer. Together we are on a journey—in transit­—trying to get to our destinations through the space external to our lived realities. We get on the nightbus and we get off the nightbus, but there is no end to this performance, there are only script alterations. This is the nightbus. Enjoy the ride.
