The period 1937 through 1941 was momentous for many people and in many ways. But for a young man in New Zealand with a camera, it provided a smorgasbord of visual opportunities. The opening up of international commercial flight, the sea change in national politics after the 1935 election and the celebration of nationhood in 1940 share space with a personal journey into the Great Outdoors. It is a very New Zealand journey.



The portfolio expresses the quintessential New Zealand character through its reliance on simple technologies - almost invariably shot with a fixed-lens camera without the use of filters and flash, developed and printed by hand - because that was the way things were.



The images capture a brief moment in time and space, complete with its patterns, diversity and contradictions.
