This wonderful book by Donald McCalman is a pictorial record of the time he spent in Antarctica in 1958-59 as a member of the Falkland Islands Dependency Survey team at Hope Bay 'D' Base or FIDS as it became known. The book gives us a rare glimpse into the everyday life of the team members in one of the world's most hostile environments.



For the work he carried out as a member of FIDS Donald McCalman was awarded the Polar Medal and the McCalman Peak 3 miles north of Crystal Hill in Antarctica was named for him by the UK-APC.
