    WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD

    A COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROJECT

    Lead by Wend Testu

    This book documents the arts program Welcome To The NeighborHOOD;

    A collaboration with youth from Literacy for Environmental Justice and artists Wendy Testu, Robert Larson, Keba Armand Konte, Taylor Neaman-Goudey, Eve S. Mosher, Monica Jensen and Sam Slater. This project has culminated in the creation of an interactive installation in the newly opened EcoCenter, San Francisco’s first off the grid public building and environmental education center. Literacy for Environmental Justice has been working on making the EcoCenter a reality for over 10 years and recently opened it's doors to the general public. The Multidisciplinary Artwork was created between 2008-2011. The project has lead the participants to create work about their personal experiences, gentrification and displacement, the opposing forces of man vs. nature, art as activism, the positive people and influences in their community and environmental and social justice issues facing the community of the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco, as seen through the youth’s eyes.

    Every meeting was filmed and photographed in order to create this book and a documentary film.

    This small book documents the journey we have been on and serves as our collective memory and to remind us of the process we went through and ultimately to reflect upon what we learned from each other.

    Please use this book as your journal and continue the process in your own way.
