    Moments of Grace

    Photographs by Ben Larrabee

    62 pp., 50 black & white images, 11 x 13”

A compendium of museum quality, photographs by nationally recognized fine art portrait photographer Ben Larrabee.

Ben is dedicated as an artist to recognizing and recording those fleeting yet memorable glimpses of life that we take for granted, moment every family has but rarely sees revealed in photographs. He calls them Moments of Grace, when two and two equals five; when truth, spirit, love and even humor come together to create a whole that is infinitely greater than the sum of its parts.

Ben's work can be found not only in some of the finest homes from Santa Barbara to Chicago to New York. but also in the permanent collections of museums including The MoMA in New York, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, The George Eastman House in Rochester, NY and The High Museum in Atlanta.

"We all have within ourselves a particular truth, a spirit and energy that makes us who we are. This authentic identity does not step forward on demand; it does not pose, and the minute I ask it to do so, I turn a picture into a statement about me rather than about you.

Indeed, my art has much less to do with taking pictures than with helping my subjects express their own truths. This never happens the same way twice. I need to be alert and awake to the energy of my subjects. I could never describe these attributes in words, but I know how to let my camera find and record them. "

My formal training as an artist began in 1962 at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where I discovered my passion through my mentor, world-renowned photographer Harry Callahan, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography. In 1978, I continued my studies at Yale University, where I earned an MFA in graphic design. My fine art background has trained me to photograph as an artist so by instinct I include elements of composition, rhythm, texture and space in my images. I am honored that my photographs, commissioned and personal, are in many private collections, as well as in the permanent collections of: The George Eastman House, Rochester; The High Museum, Atlanta; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
