JACKETS OF CHANGE
Snapshot Portraits
What does it take to be a City Year volunteer? For four weeks during the summer of 2010, 12 dedicated students from Texas A&M University-San Antonio tackled this question and came back to the classroom with honest and compelling profile portraits, completing the short course with new skills gained in interviewing, reporting and storytelling.
This immersion project enabled our communications students, some the very same age as those interviewed, to leave the comfort of campus and ask thoughtful questions about education, service and the personal motivations behind pursuing a career in service.
By interviewing city year volunteers and creating these “snapshot portraits,” our journalism students were able to listen, hear, and give resonance to these otherwise unheard stories of personal growth and community impact.
